How to Remove Warts -
Clinical and Home Removal Methods
Warts generally appear in the genital area as a result of
catching a sexually transmitted disease from an infected partner. There is generally a
negative stigmatism associated with having genital warts. Genital warts are generally
uncomfortable and can cause a constant itching and burning sensation. They are also very
unsightly in appearance. Once infected with a sexually transmitted disease, the most pressing
question is how to remove warts.
Most patients will prefer to treat genital warts in the safety
and privacy of their own homes. At home treatment methods require the topical application of a
cream. The cream is applied directly to the infected area. At home treatment methods will require
multiple applications applied over several days to remove the warts. At home methods will not
result in immediate remove of the warts but they provide privacy that most patients prefer.
Immediate removal of warts will require treatment that can only be performed in a doctor’s
office. A doctor will do a full physical examination to determine the extent of the outbreak of
your genital warts. From this examination the doctor can recommend several different methods of
treatment to remove warts.
The most common method of treatment involves the process of actually freezing the warts. The
warts will be killed by being subjected to the freezing temperature in liquid nitrogen. This
treatment method is called Cryotherapy. Cryotherapy requires the application of liquid nitrogen to
each and every wart in order to kill it. This method of treatment does not remove the HPV virus
from the body. It just removes the warts which are the visual indicators of an outbreak of HPV.
Doctors can also use a laser to treat genital warts. The laser is used to burn the wart and kill
it. The use of the laser requires the patient to undergo local anesthesia. A local anesthesia just
numbs the area where the laser will be applied. The patient retains all feeling in the rest of
their body except for the area to be treated. Laser treatment is a more invasive procedure than
cryotherapy. Patients that undergo laser treatment may require a day or longer to recover from the
procedure. Most patients are able to undergo the laser treatment and return to work the next
business day.
The most involved treatment involves loop electrosurgical excision procedure or LEEP. LEEP uses
a low voltage wire to burn the wart and remove it from the skin. LEEP requires the application of
local anesthesia.
Even though treatment done in a doctor’s office results in an immediate killing of the genital
warts, this does not prevent the virus from reoccurring in the future. There is no known cure for
HPV. Once a person is infected with the virus there is no way to remove it from the body. The virus
can remain dormant for many months or years before resulting in another outbreak of genital warts.
Patients that undergo treatment in a doctor’s office can expect to have to undergo repeated
treatments in the future when another outbreak occurs.
