How To Cure Genital Warts
Genital warts are small bumps found in the genital area of both men and women. Genital warts are
caused by the human papillomavirus which is commonly referred to as HPV. Genital warts are a
sexually transmitted disease (STD). The disease can be transmitted from a person carrying the
disease to another person through oral, vaginal or anal sex. Genital warts are the most common
sexually transmitted disease caused by a virus. Once infected, there are several ways to
cure genital warts.
Diagnosis of Genital Warts
Doctors can diagnose the presence of genital warts generally by examination. If the warts are not
currently active, women can take a Pap test. This test will detect any change to the cervix which
can be caused by genital warts.
Protection From Transmission One method of protecting yourself for
contracting genital warts is to abstain from sexual intercourse. If you do have sexual intercourse,
it is recommended that you wear a condom to protect against transmission. Use of a condom does not
provide 100 percent protection against infection because it is possible that the condom will not
cover all areas of the infected skin.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is the term used to represent the treatment by freezing to cure genital warts. The
freezing is done by the application of liquid nitrogen. The application is done with the use of a
cryoprobe. Cryotherapy is considered to have the best response rate to cure genital warts. There is
also very little side effects from this method of treatment.
Laser Treatment
Once infected with genital warts the HPV virus never leaves the body. People are subjected to
recurrent outbreaks of genital warts. Laser treatment is used for people that have frequent
recurrent outbreaks. Compared to Cryotherapy, laser treatment is a more invasive way to cure
genital warts.
The laser used to kill the genital warts. This method of treatment may require the use of local,
regional or general anesthesia. This method of treatment is much more costly than Cryotherapy.
Laser treatment may cause scaring. The healing time is much longer with laser treatment.
Electrodesiccation
This method to cure genital warts involves the use of an electric current. The electric current
will destroy the warts. This treatment method requires the use of local anesthesia.
Electrodesiccation will create a plume from the use of the electrical current. It is possible to
become infected if an infected area on your body comes into contact with the plume. Care should be
taken when undergoing this method of treatment to cure genital warts.
Medication
The last method of treatment involves the use of medication. This medication is an effective home
treatment to cure genital warts. Medications used in home treatment of genital warts are generally
topically applied. Some medications are injected directly into the infected areas.
Surgery
The final method to cure genital warts is surgery. Surgery generally involved cutting away the
genital warts. This procedure can usually be performed in a doctor’s office using local anesthesia.
