Herpes Treatment - Effective Methods For Treating Genital Herpes Infections

It is not uncommon for adults to suffer from genital herpes infections. Some studies have shown that one out of every five adults is currently suffering from a genital herpes infection. Herpes is transmitted by a virus that can only be spread through direct contact with a lesion or by coming in contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual. Even though there currently is no cure for the disease, you do not have to be embarrassed if you have herpes nor should you expect your life to drastically change for the worse. Once infected the virus remains in the body for life. There are different herpes treatment that serves to reduce viral shedding and alleviate the symptomatic episodes. The three major types of herpes treatment are antiviral, topical and alternative medicine.

Antiviral Herpes Treatment
Antiviral herpes treatment is usually taken orally. Occasionally antiviral treatment can be given intravenously in case of severe genital herpes outbreaks. Antiviral herpes treatment is designed for people who are having a primary outbreak. It is also used by people who frequent recurrent outbreaks of herpes. Frequent is defined as 6 or more outbreaks in a year.

Antiviral herpes treatment can be used to curb the length and intensity of recurrent outbreaks. Since there is no cure for the disease, some people choose to remain on constant treatment. The goal is to alleviate the length of recurrent outbreaks when they do occur. Antiviral herpes treatment is recommended for women who are pregnant.

Acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir are antiviral medicines used to treat genital herpes.

Topical Herpes Treatment
A topical herpes treatment is applied directly to the infected area. The sooner a topical solution is applied the faster you will see an improvement. A topical herpes treatment attempts to kill the virus since you apply it directly to the infected area. The quicker the virus is killed determines the length of an outbreak. It will also greatly reduce the risk of infecting others. Topical medication is applied to the infected area through the use of a dropper or other tools for the quick application.

Dynamiclear and H-Away and H-Prevention are two of the most common topical herpes treatment available.

Alternative Medicine Herpes Treatment
Alternative medicine herpes treatment is usually either homeopathic solutions or changes to diet. Since homeopathic solutions are not regulated by the FDA, there is not a large amount of case studies that show the effectiveness of these alternative solutions. Alternative medicine herpes treatment is identified by the use of natural remedies for the treatment of herpes.

Some alternative medicine remedies recommend making a change in diet. Once a person has contracted herpes, the virus never leaves the body. There are triggers that can wake up the virus. The most common triggers involve eating foods that are high in arginine which is a scientific term used to represent peanuts, sunflower seeds, alcohol and chocolate. If you remove these items from your diet then you remove the triggers that can bring on a recurrent outbreak of herpes.
