Most Common Methods Used in Genital Wart Treatment

Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease. The disease is transmitted through the human papillomavirus which is often referred to as HPV. Genital warts appear on or near the vulva, vagina, cervix or anus. They manifest themselves as bumps or growths on the genital area. Once a person is infected with the HPV virus, it never leaves their system. It is possible for it to remain dormant within a person and only flare up at certain times. Genital wart treatment can be handled by many different methods. Here are the most common methods used in genital wart treatment.

The method of treatment will be recommended by your doctor. The doctor will first do an examination to determine the number of warts and the size. This information will generally influence the type of genital wart treatment that they doctor will recommend. The location of the warts may also impact the genital wart treatment recommended by your doctor.

In Office Treatment
There are many different in office treatments that your doctor can recommend for genital war treatment. The most common method involves freezing the warts. The freezing process is accomplished by applying liquid nitrogen directly to the infected areas. The freezing process will remove the genital wart. This process is repeated until all the warts in the infected area have been frozen and removed. This method of genital wart treatment is the primary recommendation by most doctors because it does not require the use of anesthesia has a very short recovery time and can be completed in a single doctor’s visit.

Another method used for treatment in a doctor’s office is lasers. Lasers are used to burn the genital warts to remove them. This method of treatment is more invasive then freezing because it requires the use of anesthesia. Generally the doctor can perform laser treatment through the use of local anesthesia. A patient subjected to local anesthesia is usually recovered enough to return to work the next business day. For a more extensive outbreak of genital warts the doctor may be required to use regional or general anesthesia. For this reason the recovery time may be longer.

At Home Treatment
If the current outbreak of genital warts is not very widespread and the size of the warts is very small, some patients may prefer to use an at home genital wart treatment. At home treatments can be done in the privacy of your own home. They are much cheaper than the treatments performed in a doctor’s office.

At home genital wart treatment generally involves the topical application of a cream directly to the infected area. At home treatments will require repeated application of the cream in order to kill or remove the genital warts.

Even if a patient initially used an in office treatment method, it would be wise to also get a cream that can be used for treatment at home. This is because the HPV virus is never removed from your body and you can have recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes.
